Segmental block and landscape walls typically run 30 to 60 per square foot of face, installed. Timber walls start around 10 to 20 per square foot, while poured concrete and stone can run much higher.

Wall height, length, site access, drainage work, geogrid reinforcement, and footing depth dominate the price. Taller walls need engineered design and deeper foundations, which can double the cost of a short landscape wall.

Walls above about 4 feet usually need an engineer-stamped design, geogrid, and deeper footings, adding thousands and often doubling the price versus a simple landscape wall. That engineering is what keeps a tall wall from pushing over.

Gravel backfill, filter fabric, and a perforated drain pipe typically add 5 to 15 per linear foot. Skipping drainage is the most common reason walls bulge and fail, so it is not a place to save money.

Rebuilding a failed wall runs 40 to 100 or more per square foot once you include demolition, removal, and site restoration. Bulging, tilting, and drainage failures are the usual reasons walls get replaced well before their design life.

Segmental block walls are modular, flexible, and good for 3 to 8 foot heights, and they accept geogrid reinforcement well. Poured concrete suits structural or water-retaining applications but needs formwork, control joints, and usually an engineer.

Under about 3 to 4 feet with decent soil and no structures above, a gravity landscape wall without engineering is often fine. Above that height, or near slopes, property lines, and buildings, get an engineered design.

Without gravel, filter fabric, and a perforated pipe, water builds up behind the wall and hydrostatic pressure pushes it over or bulges it. Drainage lets water escape at the base instead of loading the wall.

Timber is cheapest but rots and needs replacement in 10 to 15 years. Segmental block is mid-cost, modular, and can last 50-plus years when built right. Natural stone is the most expensive and labor-intensive but has the most character.

Geogrid layers are generally needed for walls above 3 to 4 feet or in poor soils. The grid is laid back into the compacted fill in layers, anchoring the wall so the mass of the backfill holds it in place.

Look for current licensing where required, general liability and workers comp insurance, and specific experience with reinforced block walls. Ask whether they routinely work with a structural engineer on tall or loaded walls.

Hire one for walls over about 4 feet, walls near property lines or buildings, walls supporting driveways, or any site with questionable soil. The engineer stamps the design and checks the soil, which protects you more than any contractor promise.

The bid should cover excavation, footing or base preparation, drainage materials, geogrid, backfill and compaction, the cap course, permits, and cleanup. Itemize these so you can compare quotes on equal scope.

Ask about planned wall height, footing depth for your frost line, the drainage plan, geogrid spacing and spec, who pulls the permit, and what happens if the soil is worse than expected. Get the answers in the contract.

Most jurisdictions require permits for walls above 3 to 4 feet, and nearly all require them near property lines. Verify with your local building department before work starts, since an unpermitted wall can be ordered removed.

For tall walls or questionable soil, order a geotechnical report or at least dig a test pit to see what is underneath. Soft clay or loose fill changes the design, footing, and reinforcement requirements significantly.

A level, compacted base or footing, drainage aggregate and pipe behind the wall, filter fabric between soil and gravel, geogrid at the specified heights, and backfill compacted in lifts. Shortcuts in any of these show up as movement within a few years.

Installers typically warrant workmanship for 1 to 5 years, while the block manufacturer warrants materials 10 to 25 years. Ask how settlement, cracking, and bulging are handled and whether the warranty covers drainage components.

Confirm the drain pipe outlet is clear at the base or end of the wall, weep holes are unobstructed, and water does not pond behind the top of the wall. Standing water behind a wall after rain is a warning sign.

Keep the permit, engineer-stamped drawings, geogrid specification, material warranties, and any as-built notes. These documents matter for resale and if the wall ever needs repair or a warranty claim.

No footing or base, no drainage, no geogrid, a thin base rock layer, and walls built on uncompacted soil are the classics. A low bid that deletes these will likely tilt, bulge, or fail within a few seasons.

Demolition of an old failing wall, utility locates, tree root removal, engineered design, permit fees, and equipment access are common add-ons. Ask each bidder to price these separately so nothing surprises you later.

The big three are hydrostatic pressure from missing drainage, frost heave from a too-shallow footing, and sliding or tilting from poor compaction or missing geogrid. Almost all failures trace back to one of these.

Some contractors sell a decorative landscape wall for a job that is really structural, or push an engineered wall when a simple gravity wall suffices. Make the wall height, soil, and loads explicit so the design matches the job.
